Factitial injury (bitten mucosa)

The bitten mucosa is an alteration of normal tissue characterized by the whitish aspect with multiple erosions, abrasions and slight sloughing of the most superficial layers of the mucosa.  The affected tissue is paler, whitish and rough with desquamation and loss of substance due to tearing of the superficial mucosa.  It affects the buccal mucosa, lips and tongue wherever they can be reached by the patient´s bite. It is common in patients suffering from anxiety.
